Ängkärrskolan
- a truly unique school in Sweden
Located just outside of Stockholm, Ängkärrskolan is Sweden´s first and only school for dyslectic children. The school was founded in 1993 by parents who saw the special need of their children. The school has 90 students, ranging from 10-16 years of age, who study under the guidance of Ängkärrskolan´s educational staff. In order to meet the students special needs Ängkärrskolan offers a high teacher-student ratio, which enables the students to receive more individualized attention to aid in their learning. In addition the younger students learn and interact with the older students to enhance the students educational experience.
The aim of the school is to further develop traditional as well as new ways to help dyslectic children learn by combining teaching techniques used by university educators with those used by remedial teachers. This will hopefully result in the students developing their reading ability and written and oral expression and will give them an opportunity to explore many new ways to express themselves, providing them with the key to “99 other languages".
When examining the future role of Swedish schools, it is important for them to create an environment for students to become proficient in developing their capacity to use more than one “language". This is especially important because IT/Media constitutes the driving force in our current society and paves the road for the future.
